On 5 June 2017, world leaders gathered in New York City at The Ocean Conference for a high-level United Nations Conference to Support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14.
The Ocean Conference delivered a Call for Action and a list of more than 1300 voluntary commitments made by governments and multi stake holders to reverse the decline in the health of our ocean for people, planet and prosperity.
UNDP, in partnership with the Government of Sweden, is rallying all public and private entities working on ocean-related issues to register their initiatives as voluntary commitments in the conference platform .
As part of these efforts, UNDP is supporting countries to host National Ocean Consultations with the goal to:
- Create momentum around the Ocean Conference;
- Help countries and stakeholder groups to design and prepare voluntary commitments that will aid the implementation of one or more SDG 14 targets;
- Identify, register and boost the implementation of existing ocean-related commitments that may have been made after the adoption of the SDGs in September 2015; and
- Generate awareness locally about the relevance of SDG 14 for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
More than twenty countries have hosted National Ocean Consultations to-date. This space is dedicated to those. If your country is hosting consultations or campaigns for the Ocean Conference, with the aim to raise awareness and register voluntary commitments, we invite you to share the information here.
The consultations are facilitated by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with the Government of Sweden.
